Sailing and boating
-Many people come to Ardfern because it is a great place for sailing and boating.
The Ardfern Marina is located near the head of Loch Craignish and has a good slipway
and all the facilities required for top quality sailing. Fuel, chandlery, equipment,
fishing tackle etc is all available seven days a week Operating out of Ardfern
is Craignish Cruises. Trips and charters are arranged to explore the wonderful
ruggged coastline and numerous islands and inlets. Not to be missed is the world
famous Corryvreckan whirl pool - the third largest whirl pool in the world. Only
three miles drive over to the other side of the peninsula lies the Craobh Haven
Marina. This has similar facilities to the Ardfern marina as well as charter cruises.
Alternatively the loch offers some truly magical kayaking opportunities.
Local
foods The
quality of the local produce is excellent. Fish can be caught in the local lochs
and the sea. Lobsters, langoustines and hand dived scallops can be bought locally.
Delicious Beef and lamb brought up on the lush Argyll grass, can be bought from
the village shop or at the Sunday farmers market. A Barbecue is available for
cooking outdoors. The village shop / post office is very well stocked with a wide
selection of foods as well as drinks and wines.
Local eating places If you dont want to cook, Ardfern has two good eating
places: The Galley of Lorne which is the local pub and restaurant which is open
all year round. Alternatively during the tourist season the Crafty Kitchen, which
is a gift shop/cafe serves fantastic mouth watering food. Although it does not
have a drinks license, you can take your own bottle. You have to try the Scallops
from Islay - absolutely heaven! Further afield is the restaurant at Craobh Haven
(3 miles) or the Kilmartin Hotel (6 miles) Other
things to do: There are so many things to do in this part of the world. If
you are in to formal gardens, Arduaine is only 4 miles up the road. Information
on other gardens of Argyll can be accessed here. There is an Arts and Crafts Festival
in the summer - 17th July to 3rd August 2008. More information can be found here.
You could cycle along the tow path of the Crinan canal or those more adventurous
may want to explore the numerous cycle paths / tracks provided by the Forestry
Commission. Day trips to the islands including Islay, Jura and Mull are all possible
departing either from Kennacraig or Oban. If
it is wet outside for too long there is always the Indoor sports centres and swimming
pools at Lochgilphead and at Oban. Pony trecking and horse riding can be organised
over the hill from Ardfern towards Lunga estate. Golfers can play at Oban, Lochgilphead,
Inverary or the world famous Machrihanish or Loch Lomond courses. There is the
Scottish Sea Life Sanctuary at Oban. The nearest large sandy beach is at Crinan
Ferry but there are numerous gently shelving pebbly/shingle bays within walking
distance. It is also well worth the drive along Loch Sween to Kilmory Bay. Booking
